"As little as we know about the future for which we are preparing our students, it is clear that it will be a place that is governed by information. Accessing, processing, building with, and communicating that information is how we will all make our livings. Being literate in this future will certainly involve the ability to read, write, and do basic math. However, the concept of literacy in the 21st century will be far richer and more comprehensive than the 3 Rs of the one room school house, a legacy that still strongly influences today's education environment."
- David Warlick

Educator, author, and technologist, David Warlick, will challenge our thinking about what “contemporary literacy” (Warlick, 2008) looks like and means in schools today.  We will explore some of the changes and challenges facing educators as we reinvent the classroom and redefine what it means to be a teacher and a student in today’s world.  Through relevant, inspiring, and thought-provoking sessions, participants will explore some of these issues and come away with new understandings about teaching and learning in a rapidly changing educational landscape

Goals for the Day...

Classroom teachers and school leaders will gain insight into the “contemporary literacies” that:

  • Challenge traditional assumptions about literacy to match the current reality of learning and teaching today
  • Explore ways to transform classroom practice and meet the unique needs of all students
  • Engage student interest and improve critical thinking through linking to a global community of learners
  • Capitalize on and leverage existing technologies within our district
