The 2007-08 Mentorship Program is a collaborative initiative of Edmonton Public Teachers, Local #37 and Edmonton Public Schools. This is the tenth year that the program has been in place.
who can go?
Mentors are teachers with:
- five or more years of successful teaching
- a classroom assignment
- recommendation by their principal
Protégés are teachers who are:
- new to the profession
- new to the district
- new to a teaching assignment
who will travel with me?
The Mentorship Program Consultant, Karen Keats Whelan will assist with matching protégés with mentors as required. Partners are matched on the basis of similarity of teaching assignment.
A mentor may:
- identify a protege in their own school
- apply for a protege in another locaton
A protege may:
invite a colleague on staff to serve as their mentor
- request the principal's assistance in identifying a mentor
why the journey?
- facilitates collaborative learning and reflective practice
- promotes personal and professional well-being
- provides non-evaluative support for successful induction or transition
- builds confidence and nurtures a commitment to the profession
- enhances student achievement through improved teaching practice
- provides an opportunity for renewal and giving back to the profession
